Vancouver lawyer Aasheesh Puri from Acumen Law urges the B.C. Review Board to evaluate and reconsider its current procedures and protocols in light of the recent triple stabbing incident in Chinatown.

Authorities have charged Blair Evan Donnelly with three counts of aggravated assault in relation to the incident. It’s alleged that Donnelly, during a day-pass from a nearby mental health facility, unexpectedly assaulted the three individuals. The allegations remain unconfirmed in a court of law.

However, for this to happen, it’s crucial for the public to first grasp how they can engage in the review board’s procedures, Puri notes.

According to Puri, the workings of the review board closely mirror those of B.C.’s Supreme Court. During a hearing, a judge, a psychiatrist, and another experienced individual from the review board participate and jointly make a decision.

Puri mentions that individuals deemed not criminally responsible are presented to the review board. While deliberating, the board prioritizes the safety of the public above all.
