Acumen Law’s Revolutionary Tool to Record Police Stops Hands-Free

Acumen Law’s Revolutionary Tool to Record Police Stops Hands-Free

At Acumen Law, we’ve been defending Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPs) since the day the law came into effect in 2010 and DUIs for a decade before that. We know that having the most reliable evidence is critical to achieving the best outcome for our clients. That commitment has led us to develop an innovative new tool for British Columbians to record their interactions with police, ensuring they are better equipped to protect their rights.

The Challenge: Recording Police Interactions Without Breaking the Law

When you’re pulled over, the police have significant advantages. They bring authority, discretion, and the backing of the state. In many cases, the evidence you might need to challenge an officer’s account, such as body camera footage, is unavailable. Even as the RCMP begins rolling out body cameras, many municipal forces in British Columbia, including the Vancouver Police Department, still don’t use them. Worse, even when body camera footage exists, it is almost never disclosed in IRP hearings.

Drivers have the right to record their interactions with the police, but doing so openly can escalate tension. Police officers may react negatively to being recorded and, in some cases, have demanded phones or that recordings be deleted. Furthermore, touching your phone when being pulled over on a road or highway can result in a ticket for using an electronic device, even if you’re simply trying to record evidence of the interaction.

The Acumen Law Solution: A Hands-Free Recording Tool

To address this, Acumen Law has created a hands-free tool that allows iPhone users to record roadside interactions safely and discreetly. By using the voice command, “Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over,” your phone will automatically start recording audio. This recording is not prominently displayed on the phone screen, reducing the risk of a negative reaction from the officer.

Once the recording is complete, with one step you can email it to yourself and Acumen Law, where we store it securely on a private server. This ensures the evidence is preserved, protected by privilege and ready to use if needed.

Why This Matters

Since 2010, Acumen Law has defended thousands of British Columbians facing IRPs and other driving-related charges. We have always focused on obtaining and presenting the most reliable evidence possible to put before the tribunal. This tool gives drivers the power to gather critical evidence that might otherwise be unavailable.

The importance of this tool is particularly evident in impaired driving cases. For example, audio recordings can capture what the officer said before, during, and after administering a breath test. These moments are crucial, as they often highlight inconsistencies or procedural errors. Without such evidence, drivers may be left attempting to counter the officer’s version of events, which might not reflect the full truth.

How It Works

1. Download the shortcut to your iPhone: Pre-program your phone to recognize the voice command, “Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over.”
2. Activate the Recording: When pulled over, say the command to start recording.
3. Secure the Evidence: The recording is automatically saved to your device. Your mail app will open for you to email your recording to Acumen Law for secure storage.

Designed to Protect British Columbians

This tool is a game-changer for anyone who finds themselves in a roadside interaction with the police. Whether it’s for a traffic offence, a roadblock or any other police interaction, you can collect and retain the evidence. We hope you never need to use it, but if you do, it’s designed to protect you. The police have significant power in these situations, and their account is often given the benefit of the doubt. With this tool, you can ensure that your side of the story is documented with accuracy.
