Brandon Moscoe joins Acumen team as lawyer

Brandon Moscoe joins Acumen team as lawyer

A new lawyer has joined the Acumen team. Brandon Moscoe was called to the bar earlier this month. He was sworn in by Kyla Lee at our downtown Vancouver office and we’re thrilled to have him.

Brandon joined us last year as an articling student after completing his JD at Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law. He has already dealt with a number of files at the BC Supreme Court and successfully challenged dozens of driving offences. Now a full-fledged lawyer, Brandon plans to concentrate on administrative law as well as criminal cases.

Brandon will be handling judicial reviews for Acumen; this will include appeals of driving prohibitions stemming from Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRP) and Notice of Prohibition (NOP) letters.

“What I enjoy most is making the arguments and fighting for people as an advocate on their behalf.”

Brandon said: “People don’t appeal NOP and IRP decisions because they’re really difficult to win if they do it on their own. They require a great deal of preparation and knowledge of the BC Supreme Court. Not a lot of people have successfully done it.”

“A lawyer can file a notice of appeal,” he added. “Serve it on the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles’ office, review case law, and prepare precise and effective legal arguments.”

Brandon went on to say: “What’s also complicated for a lot of people is when you are appealing a decision – an IRP or NOP – what you are appealing is not really the facts. You are appealing the adjudicator’s decision-making process, the standard of review and the legal principle of reasonableness.”

Passionate about fairness

Brandon was drawn to law because he has always cared about the principle of fairness.

“I wanted to help people,” he said. “What I enjoy most is making the arguments and fighting for people as an advocate on their behalf.”

His desire to help saw him volunteer as a law student for the Legal Services Society and the faculty’s Public Legal Information Project, providing legal information and pointing people in the right direction.

His interest in Administrative law began early on. As a law student, he was also specially selected and sponsored by the British Columbia Council of Administrative Tribunals to attend their annual legal conference.

Ready and willing to help you with criminal charges

Brandon is also eager to take on criminal files.

He said: “I’m interested in doing any criminal files. I’m always willing to do anything and I have a genuine interest in criminal law. I’m ready and willing to advocate for clients in any scenario.”

New Faces

Around the same time that Brandon made the jump from articling student to lawyer, Acumen also took on two new articling students. Jodie Hartman and Ana Chamgoulova will be completing their articles with us from our Vancouver office. We’re delighted to have Jodie and Ana with us and they will be dealing with a range of administrative and criminal matters for us.

If you have been charged with a driving offence or are facing criminal charges call us today on 604-685-8889.
