Do distracted driving laws need a complete makeover?
“They had indicated that it’s unlawful to have your phone on the seat beside you but the BC Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that you are totally allowed to have your phone loose in the vehicle… as long as you’re not touching it.”
Do people continue to receive tickets for having their phone (in their cup holder, loose in the vehicle etc.)?
“Yes, people continue to get tickets for having their phone on the seat or playing music through the speaker without having the phone connected to the vehicle physically. So there are still problems with police officers not understanding the law.”
“The law is woefully out of date and I think the government owes it to the citizens who are confused by the law, the police officers who are confused by the law and their own offices who are by the law to make it clear and to bring it up to speed with current technology.”
