Lawyers who speak out

Lawyers who speak out

At Acumen Law Corporation we’re lawyers who take a stand. We feel that lawyers have an obligation to be engaged in important debates about the law in our society, that lawyers should be prepared to explain the legal system to the public and to defend the process of our courts. Lawyers in general have become an almost non-existent voice in politics over the past decade. In our mind this bodes poorly for our society. For reasons that are too numerous to mention, lawyers have censored themselves and we think that’s wrong.

The lawyers in our office are willing to speak out and we have the particular expertise.

But not us. We’re lawyers who speak out. We think that we have a moral obligation to explain what’s going on in our legal system. We think that we have a duty to actively engage in the debates about how our society progresses, to lay bare the mistakes and failings of our governments and to express our well-developed opinions in matters where we have the right expertise.

There have been government attempts to silence us. But we’re not stopping or slowing down. We’re limited only by the amount of time we have available to get the word out. We have a right to freedom of expression as guaranteed in the Charter of Rights and we’re going to use it.

To that end the lawyers at Acumen make themselves available to speak to the media and the public on a number of issues. The lawyers in our office are willing to speak out and we have the particular expertise.

Paul Doroshenko: No jargon, no bullshit, Paul Doroshenko is one of the few criminal lawyers in BC prepared to speak out publicly when our rights are in jeopardy or when the governments screw up. He went public with some of the structural and moral problems of the IRP law and exposed the scandalous failings of roadside breath tests.
He is a regular political commentator on the Global TV program Unfiltered. Paul is the go-to source for developments in DUI law in Canada. He has been a guest speaker at legal conferences in Canada and the US on drinking-driving law in BC.
Paul is one of the most vocal opponents of the new tendency in government toward moving disputes between the government and individuals to in-house government tribunals. He has been outspoken in his opposition to the BC police practice of releasing investigation information on criminal record check search result documents.

Kyla Lee: For one year at the end of her legal studies, Kyla worked on criminal drunk driving cases with a forensic scientist who was the former head of the alcohol lab of the RCMP. It was tremendous training that sets her apart from other lawyers. She’s been trained not only in the law of impaired driving and criminal defence, but also in the background of how breath and blood testing developed, the failings of the systems and the science that can cause bad blood or breath test readings. In addition, Kyla wrote a significant portion of the written argument in the Sivia case to show that the IRP law violates the Charter of Rights.
When it comes to pushing the envelope in IRP and DUI defence, Kyla is at the forefront. She successfully argued several of the leading IRP cases in BC Supreme Court including the famous Buhr decision and penned much of the written argument opposing the leave to appeal in Murray.
