A lot of people who phone our office are, understandably, concerned about getting the best lawyer for their IRP review. They want to know what the success rate is, and who is the best at defending IRP cases.
The reality is that these are tough questions to answer. When we are wondering about who the best lawyer to defend an IRP case is, we look to the information that can be verified. The numbers speak for themselves.
It’s one thing to talk the talk, and to have the shiny toys. It’s another thing entirely to be able to present a convincing and compelling argument
Most people who read our blog find us by searching online for information about their Immediate Roadside Prohibition. It can be dizzying to come into this information from the standpoint of knowing very little about IRPs. This blog has become a resource about changes and developments in IRP law over the last five years. Jumping in at the middle can be confusing.
So how do you determine who the best lawyer is for your IRP review? The ones with the most information? The ones with access to all the calibration equipment that the police use, and who own the breathalyzers that are used at the roadside? Maybe. We have all this equipment. We write the most detailed IRP blog out there.
But putting skills and practical knowledge into practice is another story. It’s one thing to talk the talk, and to have the shiny toys. It’s another thing entirely to be able to present a convincing and compelling argument, to be able to explain the technical and scientific aspects of DUI cases, and to know the steps to take to best represent clients before the RoadSafetyBC tribunal.
So how do you know who is the best IRP lawyer?
Well, the numbers speak for themselves.
Recently, someone made a Freedom of Information Request for the IRP decisions rendered in the summer months. In June there were 1327 IRPs issued. In July, 1499. And in August, 1478 were issued. Of those, not everyone disputed their IRP. But for the people who did, some were overturned and some were upheld.
You can review the decision letters here: http://docs.openinfo.gov.bc.ca/Response_Package_JAG-2015-52990.pdf
As you read through them, you’ll notice a pattern. One name come up far more often than any other lawyers in the province. As of the time of this posting Kyla Lee has succeeded in more IRP cases than any other lawyer in the province and Acumen Law has succeeded in more IRP cases than any other law office. In fact, our office won more IRPs than all other law firms combined!
The lawyers in our office are not just people who have the equipment, but they know how to use it and how to explain it, and understand what can go wrong with it and when. The reason we succeed in so many IRP appeals is because of this – we can spot patterns that many people would otherwise overlook in your IRP case. We can do this because we know how the equipment works, how the science works, and what the proper procedure is.
So who is the best person to defend your IRP case? We may not be able to answer that. But we think the numbers speak for themselves.
