Kyla Lee is a tough, straight-talking lawyer with unparalleled knowledge and skills in defending drinking and driving charges as well as other driving-related offences. Known in the legal community as “The IRP Lawyer,” Kyla is the author of Immediate Roadside Prohibitions in Western Canada, the leading textbook on defending 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions in Western Canada  DUI cases—she literally wrote the book on IRP DUI defence.

Kyla made history as the first British Columbia lawyer to successfully defend an IRP appeal before the Supreme Court of Canada, where she introduced the court to the complexities of BC’s DUI law. She is one of the few people in BC who can decipher police DUI breathalyzer records for devices like the Alco-Sensor ASDs and the Intox EC/IR II. Kyla has developed extensive legal arguments concerning Administrative Driving Prohibitions and Over .08 criminal charges and often handles particularly complex criminal cases. She completed the manufacturer’s training to operate and calibrate the Alco-Sensor FST, the newest breathalyzer used by BC police.

More About Kyla Lee

In 2019, Kyla was awarded the prestigious “Bad Ass of the Year” award by the DUI Defense Lawyers Association (DUIDLA), the highest recognition given by the association. Kyla is also the author of Cross-Examination: The Pinpoint Method, a best-selling book published by LexisNexis. She regularly teaches cross examination skills and DUI defence to lawyers across Canada and the US, assisting them in preparing for major cases and stepping in to conduct cross examinations when lawyers need to extract crucial information from a stubborn witness.

Kyla has trained to perform blood analysis for intoxicating substances at the University of Arlington and a private lab in Chicago. She has been involved in scientific experiments using the Approved Screening Device breathalyzers used in BC and has completed the official DWI Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) training, the same program followed by police officers, in accordance with NHTSA guidelines

A key figure in challenging the British Columbia Immediate Roadside Prohibition regime, Kyla was successful in opposing the first leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada in an IRP case and later made the first arguments regarding IRPs in the Wilson case. Her office has handled more Immediate Roadside Prohibition cases than any other in BC. By relentlessly searching for evidence and crafting innovative legal arguments, Kyla has helped clients overturn driving prohibitions in BC Supreme Court, often identifying subtle errors in police reports that others may miss.

Kyla’s meticulous approach led to her discovery of systemic problems with the calibration of ASDs in Port Moody, where she was the first lawyer to expose inaccurate evidence provided by the police. Her tireless efforts have resulted in significant precedents, including forcing the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles to stop using self-made evidence at IRP appeal hearings. Kyla has protected the driving privileges of thousands of British Columbians.

Her dedication to her clients is reflected in glowing testimonials: “I cannot express how happy I am with Kyla’s outstanding handling of my
IRP case. Her expert knowledge of IRP protocol and legislation was amazing, and it was her vast experience in this area that allowed us to spot errors and have the prohibition lifted swiftly. I highly recommend anyone served an IRP to contact her.”

Kyla also handles IRP and ADP appeals in BC Supreme Court and has been successful in many cases, getting prohibitions revoked or sent back for a new review by the Attorney General. She has secured the RCMP Operator’s Manual for the Intox EC/IR II long before many officers had even seen the breathalyzer and is an expert in calibration procedures and maintenance requirements for ASD equipment.

Kyla’s academic background includes a law degree and a B.A. from UBC, where she majored in First Nations Studies and minored in English Literature. She is actively involved in legal and social justice initiatives, serving on the Executive Committee of the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia, the Board of Governors, and the Criminal Justice Committee. She is also a co-chair of the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Committee and serves on the Verdict Editorial Board. In addition, Kyla is Vice President of Education and Events for the DUIDLA and a member of the  National College for DUI Defence, and the BC Civil Liberties Association.

Kyla is Métis and maintains a strong interest in Indigenous legal issues. She is an advocate for a fair and reasonable justice system and is known for her willingness to push back against government overreach and infringements of legal rights. Her ability to identify Charter issues, often overlooked by others, has distinguished her as a leading voice in the fight for civil liberties.

Beyond the courtroom, Kyla is a public figure on social media, most notably for her widely popular TikTok account, where she shares insights on legal rights, food reviews through her ChipGuru series (rating potato chips and fast food), and her passion for cooking. Kyla also writes, sings, and records music, releasing songs on all major streaming platforms. Her background as a former model enhances her ability to present not just herself but her clients’ cases with poise and creativity.

A gin connoisseur, Kyla collaborated on developing a gin to honor her grandmother’s legacy. When she isn’t working seven days a week on legal matters, she enjoys binge-watching the latest TV shows and taking vacations to Disneyland
