Today’s post, Best criminal lawyer & we are ensuring you can drive, is not as straightforward as we would like. As far as “best criminal lawyer” is concerned, The Straight is conducting its best-of poll again. It closes in a few days. Some lawyers have been working very hard at soliciting votes for the category Best Criminal Lawyer. In one sense it’s a strange request.

If you are charged with a criminal offence, and you come though relatively unscathed, then you should be happy that your lawyer did the job. But chances are you will not do any serious comparison shopping. Simply put, most people do not find themselves needing to hire numerous criminal lawyers over their lifetime. If they do, chances are that they are not that proficient in using a computer or hiring a lawyer. What that means is that most people will only know the lawyer that they hired. And they may conclude that their lawyer on that occasion is the best.

We would like the vote simply because we have spent the last 24 months as public-interest advocates. Our lawyers and the staff of our office have spent hundreds of unpaid hours over the last few years to collect evidence and to advocate for changes to the Immediate Roadside Prohibition scheme. We decided together that, because of the unreliability of roadside breath testing and the disproportionate punishment on the basis of the unreliable testing, we needed to take a stand and do something to protect our rights in law. Ensuring you can drive

We are now filing orders to postpone any potential driving prohibition in cases where the prohibition was postponed until the end of June 2012. The new orders grant the extension until November 30, 2012. If you need us to do this for you, calls us.

As for people who were in the process of the review of their IRP when the November 30, 2011 Sivia decision was issued, we are now receiving extensions of the extensions for the OSMV to issue their review decision. It seems absurd — something we have discussed before, but your Immediate Prohibition has been postponed for a year (no longer immediate) because the law was unlawful. But the important thing is that you can keep driving if you have the extension.
