An interesting new law on following/passing cyclists is now in effect.
“So if a police officer sees you passing a cyclist on the road they can write you a ticket now?”
“Yeah, so it’s a one meter distance now. So you can’t go past a bike now unless you’ve got at least 1m clearance. Are police officers going to be out there with their measuring tapes?”
“What if you have to veer into oncoming traffic now in order to give a 1m berth to the cyclist?”
“You’re not normally allowed to cross a line and that’s regulated by the MVA. And most things in the MVA don’t have an exception… But you do have an exception here.”
“The police can seize an electric bike or electric scooter, is that correct?”
“Yeah, if they have an inkling basically that that bike does not comply with whatever the regulations are, then they can seize it. It’s supposed to be on reasonable grounds but I don’t know how you’re going to challenge it.”
